Ford

The Ford Motor Company is an American automobile manufacturer, one of the largest companies in the world. Founded by Henry Ford in 1903 and headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, the company is ranked the fifth according to the sales volume worldwide.

History

Working as a chief engineer at the Edison Illuminating Company, Henry Ford spent his leisure time trying to construct a horseless carriage that was planned to be gasoline powered (an automobile in other words). In 1896, in the workshop behind his house, he created Quadricycle, the vehicle riding on four bicycle wheels that was powered by a two-cylinder four-horsepower gasoline engine, had a lever instead of a steering wheel and only two forward gears.

In 1903, Ford established the Ford Motor Company. In a month, the first Ford car – the Model A, powered by a two-cylinder eight-horsepower gasoline engine – was already made.

At that time, all the cars were assembled manually. That’s why just a few cars were managed to be built a day. Henry Ford revolutionized the American industry introducing the mass production. He began to construct large plants where interchangeable, standardized parts and moving assembly lines were used.

It was huge success of the Model T (“Tin Lizzie”), which debuted in 1908, that prompted Ford to reform the production process. The demand for it was too high for the company to cope. As a result, one Model T was turned out every 24 seconds. By 1918, the company manufactured 15 million Model Ts; a half of all cars in the US were the Model Ts then. It made the Ford Motor Company the largest automobile manufacturer in the world at that time, with a number of plants abroad.

Previously Produced Models

In 1917, the company produced its first truck, the Model TT, on the basis of the Model T. In 1922, Ford acquired the Lincoln Motor Company. The Ford Company produced not only passenger cars and trucks but airplanes, too. In 1925, it started production of Ford Tri-Motor airplanes, nicknames “Tin Goose”, which gave rise to the commercial airline industry in the USA.

Feeling the necessity to improve their products due to intense competition from other automakers, the company began to turn out the Model A in 1928.

During the WWII, the Ford Company ceased civilian automobile production to switch to military equipment making – planes, tanks, autos, and aircraft engines. At that time, Henry Ford’s political views revealed earned him fierce criticism. There’s a story that he was obstinately against the involvement of the USA in the WWI and revealed himself as an anti-Semite during the WWII.

The 1949 Ford was the first brand new post-war model. It was followed by the Thunderbird (1954), the Edsel (1957), the Ford Mustang (1964), the GT40 (1966), the Ford Fiesta (1976), the Ford Escort (1981), the Taurus (1985), the Explorer (1990), the Mondeo (1993), the Ranger EV (1996), the GT (2004).

Today, the company works on developing voice-activated connectivity systems and more effective – and at the same time environmental-friendly – engines.
