Honda is a Japanese multinational corporation that was founded in 1946 by Soichiro Honda and Takeo Fujisawa. It’s headquartered in Tokyo. It’s known as a leading producer of motor cycles and a top ten automaker in the world. Due to its huge experience in manufacturing small-type motors, the company also produces lawn mowers, portable generators, and outboard motors; lately, it has introduced an own-designed robot.
Soichiro Honda was a born engineer and entrepreneur. He was fond of engineering since childhood and was happy to help his father, who managed a bicycle workshop, to repair old bikes and improve their characteristics so that they could be sold.
When Soichiro grew up, his passion for bikes didn’t dry up. He was the first in the whole world to hit upon an idea to substitute wooden spokes for metal ones. After Soichiro built up a little motor on a bicycle, he gave serious thought to start to mass produce mopeds.
Motor Cycles Bring Recognition
In 1949, three years after Honda Technical Research Institute was established, the company introduced its first motor cycle with a sentimental name ‘Dream’.
In 1950, Honda bought a clothing factory and converted it into a plant where motor cycles were made. The same year, he constructed the Dream Type D that was followed by the Type E, which could accelerate to 70 km/h. In a couple of years, the company would launch the Bently J-type motor cycle and the Juno K-type moped. By the 60s, Honda produced the Bently JB, the Dream SA, the Dream SB-type and became second to none in the world market of motor cycles. Huge success prompted it to open American Honda Motor.
Entering an Automobile Market
1972 was a pivotal moment in Honda’s history – it initiated the Civic car production that won world recognition for the company in an automobile segment.
When the oil crisis came on, the Honda company didn’t feel it at all; on the contrary, it even benefited from it thanks to Soichiro’s wise decision: while all other automakers decreased a number of cars produced, he doubled the production and cut down the price. Consequently, Honda pushed up its sales by 76%.
The Accord Launch and Acura Introduction
In 1976, Honda’s another legendary car was launched – the Accord. Up to the present, the Accord has been one of the most popular cars in its class. It’s available as a coupe, hatchback, saloon, and an estate car.
The Accord was an instant hit not only at home but also abroad (in particular, it was the best seller in the USA between 1990 and 1992). The model was designed for a middle class who were looking for a reliable, high-quality, and, what’s more, affordable auto.
Honda’s administration made hay out of their autos’ popularity abroad and entered a luxurious cars market introducing the Acura brand. Acura cars caught automobilists’ fancy at once due to their high quality and innovative technologies applied. Meanwhile, Honda was acknowledged to be one of the leading automakers in the world.
In 1978, the Prelude was delivered. 1985 saw the launch of the Life, Legend, and Integra.
The most remarkable event for the company during the 90s was the NSX introduction. It was a truly unique model that embodied Honda’s best technological solutions of the time. It was meant to compete with the Ferrari 348 in the market of supercars.
Taking Care of Environment
Honda never stands still; as soon as it produced a new model, striking the whole world with an innovation, it gets down to developing another one, even more contemporary and advanced. Honda is the author of some original technologies such as the Variable Timing Control system, Active Torque Transfer System (ATTS), etc.
Honda entered the new millennium mastering a hybrid drive technology. The Civic Hybrid, then the Insight, and the CR-Z were rolled out. These cars – consuming four litre every 100 km – were the most fuel efficient of the time. Meanwhile, the Fit-EV electromobile entered the Chinese market as well as the Honda FCX Clarity, running on hydrogen fuel cells, began to be developed.
