2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris Test Drive
When we hear about minivans, no exciting associations are triggered as a rule. Why should they? The vehicles are neither eye-catching nor stylish; they aren’t stuffed with fun innovative technologies that would brighten up a long (usually family) trip.
However, the clock is ticking and everything changes. Now, you don’t have heart to say that the Honda Odyssey or Chrysler Town & Country are boring, do you? The Mercedes-Benz Metris has recently joined them. Welcome!
The Metris is based on the Mercedes-Benz Vito built in Spain. The latter is known to be used as a vanpool, hotel shuttle, and a vehicle for cargo hauling. Will the same fate befell the minivan that’s going to vie with Ford and GM vans, which dominate in the US commercial vehicle market? Nobody knows yet.
When evaluating its interior, don’t compare it to Mercedes passenger cars – surely, the minivan won’t be as elegant and luxurious. But it’s definitely more comfortable and modern than the Sprinter.
The Metris will be available in passenger and cargo variants. A passenger Metris has 8 seats, doors on both sides of the cabin, tinted rear screen, air conditioning, and especially developed suspension for even more comfort. Its cargo room is 38 cubic feet. Moreover, a client is given a chance to choose between top- and side-hinged tailgates. A cargo Metris offers 186 cubic feet of cargo space and 2,500 pounds of payload capacity. Both Metris variants can tow up to 4,650 pounds; their GCWR is 11,684 pounds.
Impressions from Driving
The Metris is powered by a 2.0-litre 208-hp 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 258 pounds-feet of torque. A turbocharged engine really came in handy during our Mercedes-Benz Metris test drive as we rode at an altitude of 9,500 feet – it was still full of pep when other V6s would probably lose power. Having a 7-speed automatic transmission, the minivan is available in rear-, front-, and all-wheel-drive versions.
Although it’s a minivan, the Metris was easy to control. Well-built chassis did their bit: all pot-holes we met on the way were significantly mitigated that contributed to comfort of the ride. Mercedes-Benz managed to construct a dynamic minivan. It’s a great achievement because usually these words aren’t used together. Also, the Metris is very quiet that contradicts the stereotype, too.
Yes, a passenger Metris has a lot of advantages, which distinguish it from other minivans in the market. Among other things, the Metris can fit your garage and provides its passengers with enough leg- and headroom.
However, there’s stuff the manufacturer didn’t consider. Second- and third-row seats are pretty hard and flat. It’s a pity there aren’t armrests, sunroof, and a centre console. Apart from this, rear windows are fixed and air-conditioner is loud in the back. If you’d prefer another minivan for family trips, your decision could be justified.
The automaker took the issue of safety for a new minivan very seriously that’s undoubtedly an advantage for the vehicle. There are 6 airbags in a cargo model and 8 in a passenger one. Besides, the Metris is equipped with a load-adaptive electronic stability control system and crosswind assist. Optional safety features include lane departure and blind spot warning systems, rear-view camera, hands-free parking system, collision prevention assist, hill-start assist, and a start-stop function.
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris test drive proved it’s definitely a vehicle one should pay attention to. It’s spacious and modern although there are some things it lacks. Thanks to its powerful turbocharged motor, the minivan performs very well on any terrain and altitude. An augmented suit of safety features inspires confidence. Also, it’s dynamic and easy to handle that isn’t peculiar to most minivans.
